Are you getting your moneys worth? The puppy you are hoping for, is it one that posses a loving disposition, sound mind and body? This is the puppy that you will feed, quarter, vaccinate and care for many years. This represents quite an investment financially. Not to mention the emotional investment you will make when you and your family become attached.
I know, "you are probably just looking for a pet", and figure the puppy bred out of Champion or show quality dogs are too highly priced for you. You think by referring to the casual breeder you will save money and get the pet immediately.
You are correct in thinking that the acquisition will probably be fast but is it the best decision for you? Is the person you are buying that puppy from qualified to make that decision for you? Do they have any background in temperament evaluation? Has any testing been done to better your chances of a healthy puppy? Do you hope to pick out your ten to fifteen year companion based on a few moments of contact? I wish you the best of luck, but suggest your chances are thin.
Very often the pup that runs to you eagerly is the Alfa puppy. This is the dominate one in the litter and can be quite a handful to deal with. A pup that hangs back or cowers in the corner represents another set of rules that will be necessary to know in order to best handle this animal. Support form the breeder is important! Proper placement of pets is essential for the well being of owner and dog.
Is an occasional breeder likely to go to the extent of researching the weak points of his breed and make the effort to find the dog that best lowers the chances of producing undesirable traits? He probably is not concerned, for this may be the accidental mating of his pets or the first litter in his experience. Even worse this may be some ones’ attempt to breed something exotic and rare - way out of the existing standard. Remember that three legged dogs are rare but do you want one just because no one else has one like it?
Very often the hidden faults are the worst. They are a challenge for the experienced breeder and a whole other language for a novice. Hopefully the breeder you choose has made the commitment to produce the best dogs he knows how. And you are about to reap the benefit of that commitment. A puppy at cheep prices is no bargain if it has had minimal care and no shots. You must add that cost on as well as any cosmetic surgery that needs to be done such as tail docking, dew claw. Usually these things are done by a qualified breeder and are done at a proper age with vet assistance. Also consider the age you get a puppy. The pup that is three to six weeks of age has not fully developed an immune system. Much of his immunity is still coming from his mother. If you get a puppy that has no shots, either because it is too young to receive the shots, or they just were not given. The pup’s resistance to disease may be very low. I like to keep the puppies until they are around 10 weeks old and past. They will have had several vaccinations behind them before making the adjustment to a new environment. In this way they are on the best start I can give them.
The next best promise I have to give them is a good and loving home. If you call a breeder and he asks you as many question as you do him you probably have the right one. Provided you educate yourself ! Before you go looking for that special friend you should know what the pup should look like and what the short comings and strong points of that breed are. If it just does not sound or feel right it probably is not! Please don’t buy a dog to rescue it. You just fund the people to continue damaging the breed and disrespecting the dogs. You usually get an expensive vet bill to add to your bargain puppy as well. No Bargain at all!

Germans refer to schnauzers as "the dog with a human brain". As stated by the MS standard" resembles the StandardSchnauzer" in miniature sizeing. I encourage you to review the standard at the AMSC web page and view their slide show.
The AMSC has always carefully selected their members and promoted guide lines for breeding. They have a rescue devoted to recycling misplaced schnauzers back in to loving homes. It is the goal of every careful artisan breeder to preserve the characteristics of the breed and strengthen it's weaknesses..
We breed to produce as hard a coat as possible. The temperament and conformation is as close to the written standard as possible. Breeding is always done to improve on what we have.To do less than that would be unthinkable.
Gaverts Kuken "Spice Cake" displays the type dominate in our lines.
She was a truly cobby" blocky" female with correct movement and super hard coat. All our dogs were ,later on ,shown on " Rolled Coats " for those of you starting to show, I publish a booklet on the tools and techniques for $10.00 plus shipping. I stripped coats for years and hated it. I wanted to lower the stress level and make bonding with dogs more complete. It does take a team effort to win. There had to be a better way that would lessen the impact on the dogs and my self. The problem was, no one wanted to teach you a system that gave you the edge on compitition. I learned how to roll coats from top showmen in other split coated dogs.
